What If Leonardo da Vinci Designed a Japanese Castle?

This is a fictional comedy.

History gave Leonardo da Vinci an impossible number of talents.

Painter.

Engineer.

Inventor.

Architect.

Scientist.

Musician.

Probably the sort of person who could also fold fitted sheets correctly.

History, however, neglected to send him to Japan.

Which is a shame.

Because somewhere between Renaissance Italy and feudal Japan lies the architectural meeting nobody knew they needed.

Arrival in Himeji

Leonardo stood before Himeji Castle.

He stared.

He circled it.

He sketched furiously.

Then he frowned.

"Where are the flying buttresses?"

A nearby samurai frowned back.

"Where are yours?"

The conversation was immediately declared a draw.

The Roof

Leonardo admired the sweeping tiled roofs.

Elegant.

Layered.

Perfectly proportioned.

He produced a notebook.

"Excellent."

He paused.

"What if..."

Every architect in history fears those two words.

The Flying Castle

Within an hour, Leonardo had added:

He stared thoughtfully.

"So..."

"No."

"...I shouldn't paint it?"

"No."

"...Take it apart?"

"No."

"...Improve it?"

The sushi chef slowly placed another cup of tea in front of him.

The Ceiling

Every room fascinated him.

Especially the wooden ceilings.

He gazed upward.

"They're beautiful."

Everyone relaxed.

Then he added,

"They're missing one thing."

"What?"

"A giant fresco."

Silence filled the room.

Several carpenters instinctively protected the timber.

The Castle Inspection

Months later, construction was complete.

Mostly.

The castle remained unmistakably Japanese.

Graceful.

Balanced.

Elegant.

Yet hidden within were tiny Renaissance curiosities.

A beautifully engineered spiral staircase.

A perfectly balanced pulley system.

Windows positioned with almost mathematical precision.

One very unnecessary mechanical pigeon.

No one knew what it was for.

Leonardo insisted it would become obvious.

It never did.

The local lord toured the finished castle.

He admired every room.

It wasn't working.
